Essential Oils seem to be all the rage. But, are people inadvertently hurting themselves by buying or misusing the wrong oils? There is a lot of misinformation in the marketplace. I do not sell Essential Oils; and I am not asking you to buy specific products. I wrote The Healing Art of Essential Oils to keep people safe while encouraging them to explore nature’s abundant pharmacy; one that is green, sustainable and readily available to all of us.
1. Essential Oils have properties and benefits that can help you live better and healthier lives. They can help clear up infections, coughs, colds, muscle aches, pains, and conditions like asthma, acne, burns and bruises. What is really wonderful about Essential Oils is that they do not remain in the body after they have done their jobs. They exit and are excreted by the liver and kidneys unlike pharmaceuticals which can hang around in your system for decades.
2. Essential Oils must always be diluted in a Carrier Oil. Never use them neat or undiluted. Select the appropriate Carrier Oil for the intended purpose. The face benefits from apricot seed, macadamia, hazelnut and avocado oil; the skin from jojoba, avocado and sweet almond; and calendula, jojoba, kukui nut oils are great for scars.
3. Essential Oils act as insect repellants, household cleaners, illness preventatives and skin, hair and beauty enhancers and are available in many scents and choices.
4. There are safety precautions that must be followed if you are to use Essential Oils safely. The resources page on my website lists them for you: http://healingartofessentialoils.com/ . Be sure to use the correct dilution for children and older people as their needs and tolerances differ from adults ages 18-50.
5. Always buy organic or certified organic. Essential Oils are powerful plant compounds and essences and are reduced down to a potent strength. Don’t inhale or put anything on your body that may have contaminants such as pesticides or toxins. Don’t be fooled by marketing phrases like “pure,” “therapeutic,” or “Natural.” These are advertising ploys and the only word you want to see is “organic.”
6. Essential Oils can be inhaled, diffused, used in warm packs, as compresses, as massage oils, in baths (diluted and dispersed) and applied to skin (diluted).
7. It’s a great idea to start with a basic complement of Essential Oils that you can use as a beginner’s set. I recommend: Lavender, Tea Tree, Lemon, Rosemary, Bergamot, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Roman Chamomile, Frankincense, Sandalwood, Thyme and Ylang-Ylang as a starting kit of 12. Use these Essential Oils like an artist would to paint a masterpiece. Combine and dilute them in a Carrier Oil to make them even more comprehensive and effective.
8. Never ingest Essential Oils unless you are under the guidance of a trained Aromatherapist.
9. Essential Oils are not just for massage and aromatherapy. They have qualities and benefits that can assist us with complex health issues and be used as alternatives to drugs in some cases. We can use them in concert with traditional medicine to help us manage chronic conditions and pain. Seek Holistic Advice along with your medical doctor for best results.

He took my face in his hands, looked me in the eyes and said “I am right here with you, right now, and I want to be present with you. Connection….this is something I have been thinking about a lot lately. I’m in a place in my life right now where I don’t want to just go with the main stream wording or phrases. We live in a world full of technological connections; cell phone connections, wifi connections, Facebook connections, marketing connections – yet we have become so disconnected from the human experience.
This isn’t big news, we already know this. But then I started to think about all of this on a deeper level and had an ah-ha moment. What if we used those skills we learnt from plugging into technology and make it work for us, by “plugging into” our human connections. Connecting to the desires we truly have. True Human Connection = being so plugged in that you experience everything in that moment. You feel heard, seen, valued, worthy. You sense non-judgement and safety and you can feel the energetic connection of love and compassion. (Click Quote to Tweet). Now let’s sit with those words for a moment (re-read them if you like). Step by step we can create fulfilling connections and relationships just by being present, or as I like to say; being plugged in. I found this pretty powerful.
While I was talking to my sister about my new ah-ha moment she said “To be plugged in is to be 100% present and connected. When we have multiple things happenings at once it’s like listening to several different radio channels all at the same time, we aren’t able to get all of the information or able to have the full experience.” Brilliant! Since this ah-ha moment I have been focusing on creating deeper connections by following these 3 simple steps: Be aware.
Am I present with this person or experience? Get plugged in! Say in your mind or out loud, I am right here, right now, fully with you. Be present. Or you can just think, I’m plugging in! I was to ask you to take a look in the mirror right now, what would you see in your reflection? Answer honestly. Do you like what you see? Do you wish you were someone different? Are you immediately pointing out all those flaws? We all have been there, trust me. I used to catch myself scoping out any object that would bounce off my reflection and sometimes, I couldn’t look at myself without doing just that…
BUT, a while back, I was introduced to a friend who helped pave the way so that I could live the life I’m LOVING right about now. AUTHENTIC. (Yep, you’re reading this right.)
Authentic is a magical word! A word that we don’t hear a lot about, but need it in our everyday lives. We tend to see it more in tangible things, but what about the intangible…YOU?
Here are 5 suggested tips on how you can live a NO ORDINARY authentic life.
1. Fall in LOVE with yourself, flaws and all – If you’re wondering why things in your life are not filling that void that you may be having, or relationships are not working out as they should, I think I know why… You need to be in love with who you are. (I know this sounds crazy. Love yourself?) That means accepted who you are as an individual, flaws and all. Learn what your flaws are and accept that no one is PERFECT. If you don’t love yourself, how can you expect anyone to love you the way you want them to. Your flaws make you unique just like fingerprints. When you do this, you will be brushed with so much confidence that you will be able to accept all the joys that life sends your way.
2. Release the past, BE present and live for the future – Sometimes we all get stuck on something that occurred in our past that prevents us from living the life that we want. Come join us in the moment. Learn to accept the cards that were dealt to you and look for ways that you could make the greatest impact. Today. Use your past as a stepping stone for the present and discover what your purpose is and set out to achieving it! Moments are what life is all about. Don’t spend too much time there.
3. Choose happiness – In life, we have an abundant amount of choices and views on how you see yourself and the world. When we start to think about those things, we may change our mindset to think in a negative way. If you choose to do this, you may see a pattern in your life that forms in a negative manner. My solution to all of this: choose happiness over all. No one can give you happiness. It has to come from within, just like the quote, “Don’t ever let anyone dull your sparkle” once you switch that on, your outlook on life will be so much brighter. Leave a trail wherever you go!
4. Develop yourself – This is one area where we tend to brush away as life takes us full speed. In order to achieve the most authentic life, you need to take the time to find out what drives you and chase it! If it requires further development, go get the tools to achieve it. Know that it’s OK to express yourself, trust yourself, teach yourself and above all else, surround yourself with the things that make you happy! I strongly encourage you to do one thing each day that scares you and stretches you outside your comfort zone. You may be surprised at the things you discover!
5. Form new relationships – They say the key to a successful life is to surround yourself with good people. Maya Angelou says it best, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Life is about connecting your personal and professional dots. Find people who are like-minded as yourself both personally and professionally. They will be instrumental in your self-development and vice versa. Building and maintaining relationships is so crucial in discovering who you really are as a person. Go find your people!

For a long time, something that eluded me was consistent financial success. Sure, in the past, I experienced some temporary, mediocre successes, but nothing that I would personally consider to be groundbreaking. These life circumstances created what I’d call an obsession. I know, I know—that’s a pretty startling title to a post about authenticity! When I was thinking about this topic, though, the very first thing that came to my mind was Yoda in The Empire Strikes Back. He and Luke Skywalker are in the swamp at Dagobah; Luke’s X-wing fighter plane is bogged down in the muck and his attempts to free it using the Force have proved futile. When Luke frustratedly says he’ll “try” something Yoda suggests, the old master replies:
“Do…or do not. There is no try.”
It’s the same way with authenticity. Some people spend years trying to “find themselves”, shoehorning their way into all manner of health routines, spiritual practices and self-help books, all in the hopes that something will stick. But identity isn’t just something that you glue to yourself so you can say “Look! This is me, really and truly!”
Rather, being authentic is a much more organic process. You have to stop trying so darn hard, and instead allow yourself to simply do. We aren’t especially good at this in the Western world; we want to be constantly moving forward toward the next milestone, showing our progress in measured increments. And when we try, we see it as an effort in the right direction.
But in the process of trying, it’s really easy to get entangled in the details. We worry we aren’t doing things correctly. We become self-conscious—is our progress as good as the next person’s? Is this newest attempt at being an Authentic Person going to work this time, or will it join a pile of failed hobbies and lifestyle changes that never quite made it? Will we ever figure out who we really are?
All that mental chatter is a distraction from what the actual goal is: to live authentically. Being authentic isn’t about finding the right niche or label that has all the answers to your life attached. Rather, it’s about letting go of the expectations you (and others) have for yourself, releasing yourself from the intense desire to find that next milestone that says you’re now Officially Authentic For Real This Time, and ceasing all that trying you’ve been up to lately.
Instead, turn your thoughts inward. The more deeply you know yourself, not just as a series of labels like “Capricorn” or “INFP”, but a self that transcends labels, the easier it is to live as yourself. Ask yourself a few simple questions:
Who am I? Not just labels that state relationship like “I am so and so’s parent” or “I am the spouse of such and such”, but “I am someone who was born in a small town” and “I am a very physically active sort of person.” This can take a while, and that’s okay!
–What interests me? Throughout your life, what has captured your attention and imagination the most? If you were in a bookstore, what topics would you gravitate toward, and what sorts of stories would you want to read? If you could take classes on anything in the world, and money and education level weren’t an issue, what would you explore? Don’t worry if your interests are things you haven’t thought about since childhood—they’re still important!
–How do I make myself and my interests a part of my life every day? This isn’t just a matter of sequestering yourself in a room alone to work on a hobby an hour a week. Rather, how can you embrace who you are and what makes your life interesting regardless of where you are or what you’re doing?
–How am I hiding or downplaying myself and my interests? Are you afraid to be yourself around certain people or in certain environments? How can you be more comfortable in yourself so that you are less afraid to be yourself? (There may, of course, be some places where you may need to use your discretion, whether for your own safety and consideration or that of others.)
Let me use myself as an example. Ever since I was a child, I loved being outdoors; it was hard to get me to go back inside, even in bad weather! I was also very imaginative, and played alone a lot, so I would be lost in my head for hours, pretending I was all sorts of heroes and monsters in turn. I didn’t have any friends who liked the things I did, so when I got older I began distancing myself from my interests to try to fit in, but it never really worked. And the further I got away from my interests, the unhappier I became.
Later in my teens I rediscovered my love of nature and the idea of a magical world. I embraced them, and stopped worrying about what my peers thought. Now, twenty years later, both of those loves are just two of the many threads I weave into a life and career full of creativity and adventure! I accepted who I am and what interests me, and lived my life as I saw fit—and the rest of my world moved into alignment around me.
One more thing I want you to consider: Authenticity isn’t just about big, life-changing, fulfilling moments, like the time you finally realized what you really wanted to be was a singer, or when you discovered that your family history is a really important interest of yours. Being authentic means being you all the time, whether you’re preparing dinner or getting ready for bed or taking a walk. It also means being you when the chips are down—during an argument, or a fender bender, or an illness. It’s learning to act and make choices from your own mind and heart, first and foremost, rather than letting worry about external judgment affect your decisions.
I do try out new things, like martial arts and cooking techniques. But I do so because they match who I already am, not because I want them to explain who I am or give me the answers to my life. I also go in with the understanding that I may or may not actually adopt them long-term, and that it’s okay to let something slip back out of my life if it just doesn’t seem to stick with me. I am already a whole person, as are you; we aren’t missing pieces that need to be filled in.
Stop trying to be authentic. Shake away the judgments and the expectations, see who you are underneath them, and be that person, without apology or hesitation. Do or do not. There is no try.
